As a doll maker, I am pleased if my work makes people smile, stop and think, or even laugh. I am a fiber artist and mixed media with whatever materials are needed to support my figurative work.
As a child my mother gave me her sewing scraps to make clothes for my dolls. By the time I was 15, I sewed all my own clothing. A degree in Home Economics was a natural next step. All my life I have immersed myself in all things fiber. In addition to sewing, knitting, needlepoint and embroidery, I learned to spin and weave and have taught weaving for the last 20 plus years.
After retiring from the business world in 2002, I began to seek outlets for my creative energy. I started to make dolls with patterns I found in magazines. Finally, the book, “Creative Cloth Doll Making” by Patti Medaris Culea, helped me decided that this was the outlet for my creative energy that I wanted. Because my ideas did not fit many of the patterns I found, I began designing my own.
I am a member of the Allegany Area Art Alliance and the Allegany Arts Council, both based in the Cumberland, Maryland area. I am also a member of the Maryland Mountain Doll Collectors and a founding member of the Tri State Doll Artisans who meet in Cumberland.
My pieces are available for purchase. I can be reached by Email at charlesacarnahan@frontiernet.net.
